Washington, DC – Twenty-First Century Democrats congratulates Kirsten Gillibrand and her campaign for their victory in New York’s 20th congressional district. Gillibrand was one of 34 candidates endorsed by Twenty-First Century Democrats, the nation’s 13th largest political action committee, during the 2006 election cycle.

“We are proud to have endorsed Kirsten Gillibrand this election season,” said Kelly C. Young, president of Twenty-First Century Democrats. “Kirsten will work hard to bring trust and accountability back to Washington, and serve the interests of all citizens. She plans to reach solutions that are not based along party lines, but ones that are about solving problems for the good of the people. We are confident that Kirsten will best represent her constituents throughout her time in office.”

At one time considered a safe seat for the Republicans, Gillibrand worked tirelessly in her campaign against incumbent Republican John Sweeney in order to make this race extremely competitive. In the end, Kirsten’s strong progressive platform and vigorous campaigning allowed her to find support among the citizens of New York’s 20th district and win the seat. As US Representative, Kirsten will push for universal health care, a more inclusive prescription drug plan for seniors, a strong national security plan, and energy independence for America. Furthermore, she is committed to enacting and enforcing an in depth campaign finance reform program in order to get corruption out of government.

“Kirsten’s win tonight over John Sweeny is a key part in the sweeping change rolling through America tonight,” said Young. “America was ready for a change, and Kirsten Gillibrand is going to be a major part of that change in Washington.”

The endorsement of such a small number of candidates nationwide signals a new direction for Twenty-First Century Democrats. “We are bringing the Democratic Party back to the people, and we’re making it a party of movement again,” said Young. “We need strong risk-takers to once again stand up for what they believe in, share their vision with America, and motivate millions of citizens to become active in their communities.
