Washington, DC – Twenty-First Century Democrats congratulates Keith Ellison and his campaign for their victory in Minnesota’s 5th congressional district. Ellison was one of 34 candidates endorsed by Twenty-First Century Democrats, the nation’s 13th largest political action committee, during the 2006 election cycle.
“We are proud to have endorsed Keith Ellison this election season,” said Kelly C. Young, president of Twenty-First Century Democrats. “As a member of the Minnesota state legislature, Keith perfected his extraordinary ability to build consensus and negotiate positive change. We are confident that he will use his visionary leadership abilities to bring his constituents back to the political process and teach them the power of the democratic movement.”
Throughout his congressional race against Alan Fine, Ellison received significant support from the 5th congressional district constituents, despite consistent personal attacks due to his faith. As the first Muslim elected to Congress, Twenty-First Century Democrats believes that America is one step closer to achieving leadership that is more representative of the nation as a whole. As US Representative, Keith plans to build a stronger connection between the government and the people, providing a means by which their voices can be heard.
“Keith Ellison’s commanding victory today is one piece in the sweeping change that spread throughout America tonight,” said Young. “Keith has the vision and the integrity to be a superstar in Washington, and we know he will make his district and all Minnesotans proud.”
The endorsement of such a small number of candidates nationwide signals a new direction for Twenty-First Century Democrats. “We are bringing the Democratic Party back to the people, and we’re making it a party of movement again,” said Young. “We need strong risk-takers to once again stand up for what they believe in, share their vision with America, and motivate millions of citizens to become active in their communities. Keith Ellison is the type of leader who can generate bold ideas that cross ideological lines, express our values, and solve problems that are facing our world today.”
