Washington, DC – Today, Jennifer Brunner’s victory in the Secretary of State race against Republican Greg Hartmann was a step forward for Ohioans. Twenty-First Century Democrats, the 13th largest political action committee in the nation, endorsed 34 candidates, including Brunner, during the 2006 election cycle.

“Jennifer Brunner’s victory illustrates the fact that Ohio citizens were ready for a change,” said Kelly C. Young, president of Twenty-First Century Democrats. “Jennifer truly believes that fair elections are the basis of American democracy, and should therefore be fostered and protected. We are confident that Jennifer will use her leadership skills in order to achieve what is best for Ohioans.”

The fight for the Secretary of State seat between Brunner and Republican Greg Hartmann was a pivotal race, due to the important role Ohio plays as a swing state in each national election. Her win promises to bring about positive change when it comes to election politics in this state. As Secretary of State, Brunner will work towards reforming the election process in Ohio, in order to ensure more open and fair elections in this state. Also, she plans to establish education and incentive programs for elections, in hopes to subsequently increase participation in Ohio’s communities on Election Day.

“Jennifer Brunner is exactly the kind of leader we need in the secretary of state position in Ohio,” said Young. “She will bring back nonpartisanship to the office and she will be a consistent and constant voice for voting rights and increased voting access.”

The endorsement of such a small number of candidates nationwide signals a new direction for Twenty-First Century Democrats. “We are focused on locating and supporting those candidates who can successfully connect with America’s citizens,” said Young. “We believe that these extraordinary leaders will push for a change and bring the power back to the people.
